How to Administer Abortion Pill?

There are two ways to go ahead with medical abortion. The safest and the most effective way to do it is by using Mifepristone and Misoprostol pills. However, if Mifepristone is unavailable, you can follow the Misoprostol alone procedure as well. But the success rate of it is lower than the combination medication therapy

1. Pregnancy Termination with Mifepristone and Misoprostol

You need to take a 200mg Mifepristone single pill on day 1. Consume the medicine orally with water. Then after 24 to 48 hours take 200mcg x 4 pills of Misoprostol (800mcg total dosage). You can take Misoprostol buccally by putting two pills in either of the cheek pouches and letting the medicine stay for 30 minutes. Do not drink or eat during this duration.

You may start cramping and bleeding in 2 to 4 hours. If even after 24 hours, the bleeding does not start or you are not sure of the abortion pill’s success, then take the addition of 400mcg Misoprostol. It may be usually a case if the pregnancy is over 5 weeks of age.

If taking Misoprostol vaginally, then lay down and insert one pill after the other inside the vagina towards the cervix and stay for half an hour. The melted contents will go into the uterus and help end the pregnancy.

2. Pregnancy Termination with Only Misoprostol

If you are unable to get Mifepristone pills, then you can get pregnancy ended with Misoprostol alone. But here, you will have to take 12 pills of 200mcg strength each. As discussed above, you can take the medicine either buccally or vaginally. However, buccal administration may seem better here as the number of pills is higher. But you have to use 4 pills at a time in a gap of 3 hours.

After placing the medicine in the cheek cavity, do not forget to wait for 30 minutes before consumption. The bleeding can start either 3 to 4 hours after the complete dose of 12 pills, or in between. But do not reduce the dosage even if the bleeding starts earlier than the administration of all the 12 pills.
